New ‘food and footy’ CityGlider links inner city venues
Lord Mayor and I today announced an exciting new City Glider Service from Paddington to Stones Corner. As your local Councillor I have been making representations on behalf of Traders along Latrobe Terrace and Caxton Street. This “food and footy” service will improve public transport services, tackle traffic congestion and provide greater public access to our retail and entertainment precincts. I am very excited to bring this outcome for our Ward of Toowong. Council is aiming to have the service running from next financial year.
Running from Paddington to Stones Corner, the distinctive maroon CityGlider will stop at a number of iconic cultural and sporting locations including Suncorp Stadium, Caxton Street, Cultural Centre, South Bank and the Gabba.
Cr Quirk said it would provide residents and visitors with even greater public transport choice when attending some of the city’s most popular events.
“The maroon ‘food and footy’ CityGlider is part of my plan to tackle traffic congestion and improve public transport across the inner city and connect key entertainment destinations including footy venues and food precincts,” he said.
“CityGlider is extremely popular among inner city residents travelling home from dinner or a night out in West End, the Valley or the City. I expect the maroon CityGlider will also be very popular.
“Late last year the CityGlider service carried its three millionth passenger in just over 18 months and has proven to be one of Brisbane’s most popular routes.
“The decision to create a new route which takes in Brisbane’s most distinctive destinations was an easy one and I am confident it will also prove to be just as popular and bring economic benefits to businesses in areas such as Stones Corner, Woolloongabba, South Bank and Paddington.”
Launched in April 2010, CityGlider is Brisbane’s first high frequency bus service to run without a set timetable, with the current route travelling between West End and Teneriffe through the CBD, carrying more than 40,000 passengers each week.
The maroon CityGlider is forecast to carry up to 500,000 passengers in its first year. The original CityGlider serviced 1.6 million passengers in its first 12 months, compared to a forecast of 650,000.
Cr Quirk said the new service would also be high frequency, leaving every five minutes during peak times and every ten to fifteen minutes off peak. It would operate as a 24-hour service on Friday and Saturday and 18-hour service on other days.
He said the buses would have a distinctive maroon livery that represented the city’s sporting colours of the Brisbane Broncos and Brisbane Lions, as well as the Queensland Bulls and State Of Origin team.
“This is part of Council’s balanced approach to reducing traffic in the inner-city by providing a route which does not travel through the CBD and which is also taking cars off the road,” he said.
Cr Quirk said Council aimed to have the service running from next financial year and as per current arrangements will be approaching the Queensland Government to jointly fund the service.
About 79 million passengers travelled on Council buses last year.
